Application rules
Subject to Chase 5/24
Chase won't approve it if you've opened 5 or more personal cards from any bank in the last 24 months.
Counts toward 5/24
Opening it takes one of your Chase 5/24 slots.
Once per lifetime
You can't get the Sapphire Reserve while you have it open, and you may not get its welcome bonus if you've ever had this card or earned its bonus before, including if you got it by upgrading or product changing. Having the Sapphire Preferred doesn't block it. Chase usually shows a pop-up before checking your credit if you're not eligible, and may also look at how many cards you've opened and closed.
2 in 30 velocity
Chase usually approves no more than two personal cards in a 30-day period.
Product changes
- Downgrade to Sapphire Preferred · You keep your points and transfer partners and pay a $95 fee instead of $795. Switching counts as having had the Sapphire Preferred, which may block its welcome bonus later, so apply for it instead if you haven't had it.
- Downgrade to Freedom Unlimited · You keep your points and drop the annual fee, but you can only transfer points to airlines and hotels while you also hold a Sapphire or Ink Preferred.
- Downgrade to Freedom Flex · You keep your points and drop the annual fee, but you can only transfer points to airlines and hotels while you also hold a Sapphire or Ink Preferred.
- Downgrade to Chase Freedom · Chase still lets you switch into the original Freedom card, which is closed to new applicants. You keep your points and drop the annual fee.
