Citizens of 74 countries and regions, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the EU, visit visa-free for up to 90 days (UAE nationals 30 days); visa fees rose fivefold on 1 Jul 2026 for those who need one. Recent and upcoming changes

  1. JESTA electronic travel authorization (deadline)

    A law passed on 29 May 2026 creates JESTA for visa-exempt travelers, to start by the end of fiscal 2028; fee and launch date not yet set. Source

  2. Visa fees raised fivefold

    Single-entry visas rose from JPY 3,000 to about JPY 15,000 and multiple-entry to about JPY 30,000, the first change since 1978. Source

  3. Departure tax tripled to JPY 3,000

    The International Tourist Tax rose from JPY 1,000 to JPY 3,000 per departure. Source
