# Name That Card: The Daily Credit Card Guessing Game

## Guess the mystery credit card in six tries

If you can tell a Sapphire Preferred from a Venture X at a glance, or
know which airline card has a $99 fee and a 70,000 mile bonus, this one's
for you. [Name That Card](/games/name-that-card) hides a mystery US credit
card behind a blurry, black and white photo of its card art. You guess
any card, and the game compares it with the mystery card on six clues:
issuer, rewards, personal or business, annual fee, welcome bonus and top
earn rate. You have **six guesses** to name it, and the picture gets
sharper with every miss.

There's a new **daily card** at midnight, the same one for everyone, so
you can keep a streak going and compare scores with friends. **Practice**
gives you unlimited rounds. It's free, there's nothing to sign up for,
and a round takes a couple of minutes.

## How to play

1. **Pick a mode.** **Daily** is one card a day, the same for everyone.
**Practice** deals a new random card whenever you like.

2. **Make a guess.** Type part of a card's name ("Sapphire", "Amex Gold",
"Venture X") and press Enter or tap it in the list. You can guess any
of the 196 US cards in AwardHack's card catalog, including 23 that are
closed to new applicants (they're marked "closed").

3. **Read the tiles.** Your guess gets a row of six tiles, one per clue,
colored by how it compares with the mystery card. Arrows on the number
   tiles point toward the answer.

4. **Watch the picture.** The mystery card's art starts blurred, zoomed
in and in black and white. Each miss brings it a step closer to
   sharp and in color.

5. **Name it.** Get the card within six guesses to win. The card flips
face up with its fee, welcome bonus and best earning rates, and a Share
button copies your result as a grid of colored squares without giving
   away the answer.

Your stats (games played, win rate, current and best streak, and how many
guesses your wins took) are kept in your browser, separately for Daily and
Practice. The panel under the picture, **What you know**, sums up every
clue so far: the issuers and rewards it isn't, and the range the fee,
bonus and top rate must fall in.

## The clues

| Clue | Green | Amber | Grey |
| ---- | ----- | ----- | ---- |
| Issuer | Same bank | | Different bank |
| Rewards | Same program | Same kind of rewards | Different kind |
| Type | Both personal or both business | | One of each |
| Annual fee | Same fee | Within $100 | More than $100 off |
| Welcome bonus | Same bonus | Within 25,000 points | More than 25,000 points off |
| Top rate | Same rate | Within 1x | More than 1x off |

**Rewards** is the points program the card earns: Chase Ultimate Rewards,
Delta SkyMiles, Hilton Honors, cash back and so on. Amber means the same
kind of rewards in a different program, with five kinds: bank points
(Ultimate Rewards, Membership Rewards, ThankYou, Capital One miles and
other bank currencies), airline miles, hotel points, cash back, and other
travel rewards (Amtrak, Carnival and Expedia).

**Welcome bonus** is the card's public offer. Cash bonuses count as 100
points per dollar, so a $200 cash bonus sits next to 20,000 points. A
bonus that isn't plain points, like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless's free
night awards, shows its points equivalent with a "≈".

**Top rate** is the most the card earns per dollar in any category,
including travel booked through its own travel portal and purchases with
its airline or hotel brand. Cash back cards show it as a percentage. The
small line under it says where that rate applies.

For example, guess the **Amex Gold** when the answer is the closed
**Citi Prestige** (closed cards are never the answer, so this one can't
spoil a daily): Amex is grey, Amex Membership Rewards is amber (both earn
bank points), Personal is green, $325 is grey with an up arrow (the
Prestige's fee is $495), 100K is grey with a down arrow (it has no public
bonus), and 5x is green.

## Strategy tips

- **Start in the middle.** Of the 161 cards that can be the answer, 61
have no annual fee, 106 charge $99 or less and only 25 charge $395 or
more. A first guess with a fee around $95 and a bonus around 60,000 to
75,000 points, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, splits them well.
- **One guess settles the type.** A grey Type tile means the answer is
the other kind. 119 of the possible answers are personal cards and 42
  are business cards.
- **Follow the big issuers.** Chase (38), Amex (29) and Barclays (21)
issue more than half of the possible answers.
- **Use the rewards kind.** Airline cards are the biggest group (55),
then cash back (41), bank points (37), hotel points (24) and other travel
(4). An amber Rewards tile tells you the kind before you know the
  program.
- **Trust the ranges.** The What you know panel combines every arrow, so
you can rule out whole groups of cards without doing the math.
- **Look at the picture for twins.** A few cards match on every clue:
the Capital One Quicksilver and Savor, the Chase Aer Lingus, British
Airways and Iberia cards, the Schwab and Morgan Stanley Amex Platinums,
the two AARP cards and the two AAA cards. A different card can light up
all six tiles green; the card art is how you tell them apart.

## FAQ

**How many guesses do I get?**
Six. If you don't name the mystery card in six guesses, the game reveals
it.

**Which cards can be the answer?**
US cards from AwardHack's card catalog that are open to new applicants,
have card art and have a public welcome bonus: 161 cards right now. You
can guess any of the 196 US cards in the catalog, including closed ones,
to learn from their clues.

**What is the daily card?**
One mystery card a day, the same for everyone. It changes at midnight
your time, and no card repeats until all 161 have come up. Play every day
to build a streak.

**What does an amber tile mean?**
Close but not the same: the same kind of rewards in a different program,
an annual fee within $100, a welcome bonus within 25,000 points or a top
earn rate within 1x.

**How are cash back bonuses compared with points?**
At 100 points per dollar, so a $200 cash bonus counts as 20,000 points.

**Why did a wrong guess get all green tiles?**
Some cards share every clue, like the Capital One Quicksilver and Savor.
Compare your guess with the card art to pick the right one.

**How do I share my score?**
When the round ends, click Share. It copies one row of colored squares
per guess, without the card's name, so you can paste it anywhere.

**Is Name That Card free?**
Yes. It's free to play with no account required, as many times as you
like.
